Victory Point Cabernet Sauvignon

VINTAGE 2020 IN MARGARET RIVER
The region enjoyed an early start to the 2020 season, with warmer than average Spring temperatures evolving into the perfect summer growing conditions. Low disease pressure, timely flowering of the native Marri trees to keep the birds at bay and little to no rain.

The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit was picked on the 13th March 2020, at 13.5 Be.

Vinification

The grapes are static fermented and pumped over 2 – 3 times per day with 12 days on skins to achieve a brightly-fruited wine with good flesh and a refined tannin profile. 15 months in French barriques, 38% of which were new.
The final blend is 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Malbec.

The wine was bottled in December 2022 and sealed under screwcap closure.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby red in colour, with perfumed red fruits sitting over lightly smoky and flinty oak. A lick of vanilla adds to the generosity. Dark cherry and cassis characters with a hint of sage. The tannin structure which borders the palate ensures that this wine will drink well for many years to come. This is undeniably Margaret River Cabernet.
Polished and layered, with density and depth of dark fruit flavours, finishing with a cleansing and pleasing acidity.

Victory Point 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon

Could smell this for days. Sweet tobacco, cinnamon, bay leaf. Medium-bodied — as Cabernet should be — with just enough grunt. Black plums, sweet mulberry, shaved pencil. Quietly hits every mark, no fuss, no flab. Long, savoury finish with soft edges. Victory Point is still one of the most underrated producers in Margaret River — a dry-grown site tucked a little inland, doing its own thing. Wines of pedigree. This isn’t the exception, it’s the rule. It’s giving… dusty original vinyl. Drink with your dad. Eat with herb-heavy pasta. Fresh, savoury, and bloody good.

Victory Point 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon

From vines that are now over 25 years old this is super fragrant with salty plum, black olive, thyme and sage jumping out of the glass. The palate is elegant and refined with the tannins very fine and powdery against the refreshing acidity. The balance and tension between flavour the structure are seamless. The fruit has a purity and intensity that draws you back in to take another sip. The length keeps going and fans across the tongue like a peacock’s tail with bright flavours of cassis, mulberry, cedar, tomato leaf and a dash of oregano and basil. Sip this with home-made Shepherd’s pie (lamb mince, a rich gravy and buttery mashed potato).
