2018 Cabernet Sauvignon

 Cabernet Sauvignon Cheese Board

Victory Point Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2018 vintage in Margaret River presented us with close to ideal growing conditions for wine grapes. The temperatures and rainfall were remarkably close to average for the season. It was very typical of Margaret River’s Mediterranean climate with a cool, wet winter and a mild, dry summer.

The rain which fell in December was well timed, filling soil profiles leading into veraison. Over January the Marri blossom was out in all its glory, which kept bird pressure at a minimum. The dry conditions meant the fruit was in perfect condition and picking decisions were able to be made to optimise quality. The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit was picked 23rd March 2018 at 14.0 Baume.

Vinification

Hand-plunged in small batch open-top fermenters with a total of ten days on skins. The result is a brightly fruited wine with good flesh and a refined tannin profile. French oak barrels were used, 40% of which were new. The wine was aged in barrel for 16 months before extensive blending trials were undertaken to determine the composition for the 2017 vintage.
The final blend is 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot.

The wine was bottled in December 2020 and sealed under screwcap closure.
