WELCOME BACK TO VICTORY POINT VINEYARD

This month, we're proud to announce the release of Victory Point's 2011 Chardonnay.

Victory Point 2011 Chardonnay

NEW RELEASE!

This is the seventh vintage of Chardonnay from the vineyard and truly reflects a great Margaret River vintage and the distinctive style that Victory Point Chardonnay has become renowned for.

Reviews of Victory Point 2011 Chardonnay

James Halliday - 95 points

"Estate-grown (60% Mendoza and 40% Dijon clones), whole bunch-pressed, wild yeast barrel-fermented in French oak (40% new), 2 months stirring, plus 8 months maturation, no malolactic fermentation. Bright green-gold, this is a very complex, rich Chardonnay with white peach and nectarine neatly balanced by citrusy acidity. Drink to 2020."

At Victory Point, every decision our viticultural team makes is to enable the best quality fruit to be produced. In 2011, the vineyard benefitted from higher than usual rainfall over summer and the generally warmer temperatures led to the earliest harvest dates of the Chardonnay grapes. The Mendoza clone was harvested on the 18th February and followed by the Dijon clones, 95 & 96 on the 21st February and clone 76 & 277 on the 22nd February. Fruit sampling begins approximately four weeks before the estimated harvest date and samples are taken weekly until approximately ten days prior to harvest. All samples are analysed for sugar concentration, expressed as either Brix or Baumé, and Titratable Acid (TA). Samples are collected in the early morning and taken to the winery for analysis. As the fruit nears full ripeness, samples are taken daily for analysis. At this point the winemaker and our team will also assess the fruit flavours of each block by tasting the fruit daily. This is the "Art versus Science" moment and is the key to determining the optimum picking day. Our winemaker, Mark Messenger, acknowledges the great quality fruit he receives and once again, with the 2011 vintage has created a stunning wine.
Once bottled, the wine is stored in the temperature controlled warehouse facility at Portavin.

Having made the tough decisions in the vineyard and employed the skills of one of the best winemakers in the district, we also ensure all of our wines gain the appropriate bottle age so they can be enjoyed at the time of release.

This delicious wine will benefit from decanting and will continue to develop and cellar over the next five years.

The Vines are Shaping Up Well for Vintage 2015

We left the vineyard at the end of August for a few weeks in Spain and France. The expert pruners were just starting to prune the Chardonnay vineyard. Once pruned you can just about stand back and watch the vines shooting before your eyes.

The photos show the amazing growth which took place over that period. Our vineyard manager reported - "this season is like a rollercoaster on speed."

Don't Miss Out

The last stocks of the 2010 Chardonnay, which put us on the International map by winning the Gold medal at the prestigious London International Wine Challenge, need to be cleared. We are offering them to our mail list customers for the case price of $360, while stocks last. A pretty good bargain, given some of the wine it beat in London sell far in excess of $1000s per case.

Provence - Home of Rosé

It's been five years since introducing our dry Rosé to the market and the Rosé Revolution has gained a great following in this country. The timing was right for another R & D trip and the home of quality Rosé has to be Provence.

We found this fabulous villa, overlooking the Porquerolles islands near the town of Le Lavandou and can highly recommend it. Apart from the stunning view and location, the charming owners ensure you get the most out of your time there. Check out their link.

Throughout the region, Rosé rules. There is hardly any white wine to be seen – why would there be? Vignerons do not grow white wine grapes in these parts, so consumers support the local producers and drink Rosé and the red varieties which are produced. We conducted a fairly extensive tasting of dry Rosés and they were generally quite good.

2014 Rose

Unfortunately the good French Rosés, that are 15 euros in France, can be $70 to $100 by the time they get to Australia.

We still think that the cabernet franc/malbec blend that we are using in our Rosé, which is similar to Cahors producer, Lagrezette, is the right one for us and is preferable to the Grenache based Rosés. However, we continue to experiment with time on skins and a little barrel fermentation and are thrilled with the new vintage.

We have had fantastic feedback about the wine and the new label, featuring Bronwen Newbury's artwork. Make sure you are well stocked for summer. This wine is selling fast, but don’t worry, we're aiming to make twice as much next year.

With few exceptions, the Spanish viticulture and winemaking have not caught up with the new world and the wines were underwhelming. It is surprising to see so many of them on wine lists in Australia, which may reflect the low cost of import and the high profitability for restaurants. We are very fortunate that Margaret River produces some of the very best wines in the world on any measure, including value. We did however, discover some pretty creative labels ...

Victory Point Wines Cabernet Served to
the World's Top 20 CEOs

This stunning setting is Otto Ristorante on Woolloomooloo wharf Sydney, where Victory Point 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon was the wine chosen to be served to the 20 CEOs attending the B20 wrap up dinner. It was the Chairman’s choice, - Victory Point friend and supporter, Richard Goyder, hosted the event and selected the wines.

2014 Rose

We understand that the wine got rave reviews which we think reflects the fact that it has come into perfect balance.

Unfortunately Jude didn't quite make the guest list, but is hoping to get over to Sydney soon, where it's a thrill to see our wines being served in the top restaurants of this fabulous city.
Victory Point Chardonnay & Cabernet Sauvignon are now also available at most Vintage Cellars stores, in and around  Sydney. Please ask for them.

We really appreciate the support from our mail list clients and the sales from our last newsletter, in which we released the 2012 Mallee Root and announced the stunning reviews for the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon, were the best ever. Thanks for all of the great feedback, and we are sure you will continue to enjoy our great red wines as they (deservedly) receive more recognition from the "professional" critics.

Aboriginal Heritage

Throughout our newsletters this year, we have been observing the six seasons as defined by the Wardandi people, the traditional custodians of our region.

We are now in the Kambarang season, mid-October – mid December. This is season is known as the time to:

  • Hunt ducks and feast on swans.
  • Camp at the river mouths and join family and friends to feast on fish caught in the fish traps.
  • Trade - it is the time of the great manjar (trade gatherings)

The Wardan Aboriginal Cultural Centre (www.wardan.com.au) offers guided tours which include tasting bush tucker, learning bush medicine and meeting the animals, plants and Dreaming spirits that have enriched the lives of the indigenous people since time began.
